Despite the chill it was time to "Play ball!"
The sunshine provided some warmth but the northwesterly wind with temperatures in the 40s didn't feel like softball season. Even so, it wasn't enough to keep these girls and their parents from gathering for a "travel team" tournament last Saturday at Smithfield Community Park. The teams, unaffiliated with public schools, came here from surrounding counties. A coach said the event was used for umpire training.
