 A Good Friday good deed
for East Smithfield's school kids One reason they did that is to make it more convenient for parents of the neighborhood's school kids to pick up meals without having to drive several miles out of town to West Smithfield Elementary School, where the children are assigned. Another reason was to collect food items for the Backpack Buddies program at West Smithfield Elementary --- an effort going on for several years now to provide bagged meals for underprivileged school kids over the weekend. That's why Mr. Lee and his associates "set up shop" on Good Friday in the absence of the school system's program, which has been suspended till April 20. They made it a special occasion by handing out Easter eggs and free books in addition to the bagged meals they had put together. Looking ahead, Mr. Lee said organizers of the current food drive at the Sarah Yard Center will not only continue their efforts during the coronavirus crisis but also provide a distribution point for the school system's Summer Nutrition Program serving needy youngsters a few months from now.  Here's a list of donors so far to the Backpack Buddies drive in East Smithfield:
