A THANK-YOU CARD from the small businesses of Downtown Smithfield  Downtown Smithfield Development's Director Sarah Edwards put together this photo montage of a dozen merchants who have done their best to stay in business despite the coronavirus shutdown back in mid-March. Fortunately, they're now able to accommodate more patrons after last week's lifting of some restrictions by Governor Roy Cooper. An exception is Gotham's Deli, which temporarily and voluntarily closed its doors last week after learning that one of its employees had been in contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19. Director Edwards said this morning (Thursday) that Gotham's plans to re-open on Monday. Meanwhile, Downtown businesses still closed include the Howell Theatre, Ava Gardner Museum, Little Brown Jug, Saddle Up Saloon, and Simple Twist Taproom.
