 Here's the face of Johnston County's new jail – actually, a Detention Center more like a modern prison than a conventional jail – being built beside US 70 Business east of town. The graded land in front of the structure seen here will host another new structure: the county's Public Safety Center that will house the Sheriff's Department, Emergency Management, and 9-1-1 Communications. The steel framework is taking shape for Johnston Community College's new home for its emerging School of Engineering. It's located near the intersection of College Road and West Market Street (US 70 Business):
Going up near Smithfield Cinemas on Equity Drive is a Tru Hotel by Hilton, the latest in a series of multi-story accommodations clustered off Outlet Center Drive just north of West Market Street:
One of several new residential subdivisions under construction or planned around the outskirts of town is Kamden Ranch near the intersection of Cleveland and Swift Creek roads. It's slated to have more than 100 single-family residences:
Grading for streets and installation of utilities is now going on at a subdivision to be called Twin Creeks off Black Creek and Galilee roads next to West Smithfield Elementary School. It's scheduled to hold 90 building lots:
Meanwhile, the large East River
residential subdivision continues to grow, with recent
approval by the town of its final phases clearing the
way for townhouses in addition to single-family units
on the east side of Buffalo Road just north of Durwood
Stephenson Parkway. And there's more commercial construction in progress, including new buildings to house Johnston Animal Hospital and Smithfield's Chicken 'N' Barbecue on North Bright Leaf Boulevard and another assisted-living facility on Kellie Drive near Neuse Charter School and Smithfield-Selma High.
